IF you watched The Eleventh Hour, you will know by now that one of the major plot strands will be the cracks that have mysteriously appeared in the skin of the Universe.
Starting in Amy’s bedroom wall and then on the TARDIS’s new monitor, the cracks look like they will be popping up everywhere and in every episode.
But what caused them? The Doctor doesn’t know, but rewatching T11thH today made me wonder if Steven Moffat has already told us, but hidden that information in plain sight.
Do you remember the scene where the Doctor confronts Prisoner Zero in the hospital ward and asks it to open another crack in space and time to leave Earth, so the Atraxi won’t incinerate the planet?

Its reply is that it didn’t create the cracks, before it adds:
“The cracks in the skin of the Universe, don’t you know where they came from? You don’t, do you?!”
“The Doctor in the TARDIS. Doesn’t know! Doesn’t know!”
Taunting, yes? But why? Because it knows something and the Doctor doesn’t, a last victory before the Atraxi shaped hammer comes down.
But if you read it another way, the meaning changes. It may have been saying the cracks came from The Doctor in the Tardis, not just revelling in the fact that he doesn’t know.
‘… don’t you know where they came from? You don’t do you? The Doctor in the TARDIS …’
After all, he had just fired out huge amounts of time energy when he regenerated, enough to batter the TARDIS with unprecedented levels of force.
If some of that energy was vented as the TARDIS tried to repair itself, what damage could it have done? Did it open the crack in Amy’s wall (he did say wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey)?
And what may have fixed on the Doctor and come through the cracks, just like Prisoner Zero and the Atraxi, when the Pandorica opens and silence will fall?
I guess we will find out in the weeks ahead, but it made me ponder anyway and I wouldn’t put it past the Moff to throw something like that in. What do you think?

@fred fulford: Adelaide’s suicide pretty much bent everything back. Some minor details changed, but ultimately everything that had to happen happened. The cracks are unlikely to be related to anything from the Davies era, at least not entirely.

Stuart, my friends and i have came up with a VERY plausible theory regarding “something darker” its very interesting what we’ve come up with and it makes more and more sense each episode. The thing is… I don’t know how to submit articles… any help?

There have still been no repercussions from the waters of mars. He changed a fix point in time, he bent the universe in a way it’s not supposed to bend… And nothing came of it. Very odd… Unless…
I had the feeling that the cracks have something to do with Amy.
the crack seems to be following her, in her bedroom wall, on the UK starship so far…. the doctor has a monitor in the TARDIS of the crack… which he turns off before she can see it.
then theres the duck pond without ducks lol
Could the cracks be some kind of fall-out from his confrontation with the Time Lords in END OF TIME, PART 2? It’s entirely possible the breaking out of the Time Lock over the Time Wars created “ripples” across time and space and left these cracks. Perhaps other nasty things have slipped through those cracks that were from the Time Wars? Maybe the Dalek we meet next week is one of them. Perhaps this will also be the how the Master is, ultimately, brought back into the series…
Oh and at the end of Ep 2 the crack is present in the surface of Starship UK
And I think his selection of Amy as companion is connected to it too — when she asks why she’s been chosen he’s a bit uncommitted about it. Because I’m lonely. Could be shyness, could be something darker.
