I think what’s interesting is that suicides of one form or another happen on Doctor Who all the time — Davros listed some of them for us in Journey’s End. But they tend to be a direct bit of sacrifice like the hostess in Midnight or the Laird in Tooth & Claw and in most cases the person doesn’t have a direct choice. This seemed far darker, less Saturday night, because Adelaide had a choice. She could have said, oh sod the future, I want to live now. But she took her life to save people she didn’t know. Total strangers. And the results were far starker and more dramatic because of it. There’s a certain parallel with last week’s Flash Forward in that regard.
