I REALLY liked Mission Impossible 3 and this new trailer for Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol makes me think it could match its predecessor, or at least not be terrible.
Tom Cruise‘s bizarre promotional antics aside, MI3 was a sharply directed action film with great set pieces and a good performance from the Cruisester, who really threw himself into the role.
What’s more, it focused on the IMF as a team operation, with Ving Rhames, Maggie Q and Jonathan Rhys Meyers all having their bits to do and stand out moments.
Having Philip Seymour Hoffman and Billy Crudup as the baddies was a great move too, giving weight to characters who could have been charicatures.
Why I was pleasantly surprised by the film was that it wasn’t MI2, which seemed to be not so much a film as a series of slow motion close-ups of Tom Cruise’s face and hair.
Looking at the trailer above, it looks like Simon Pegg et al will also take semi-centre stage, which can only be a good thing for the film to make it seem less like a director’s love letter to Tommy boy.
