I HAD never heard of Viganella, but now I am desperate to visit the tiny Italian village because it is the only place I know with its own giant solar mirror.
The locals decided they were tired of doing without the sun for two and a half months of the year because of their location at the bottom of a steep valley surrounded by mountains.
Instead of moving, as most people would, they installed a sun-reflecting mirror that measures 40 square meters in size on the mountainside above the village for a whopping 100,000 Euros.
This is controlled by a sophisticated computer programme which tracks the sun and keeps it reflecting onto the village until it returns to the point in the sky where it can shine on the village by itself.
That has to be one of the most awesome things I have ever heard of and an incredible use of science and out of the box thinking.
