SO I managed to watch the second half of The Wedding Of Sarah Jane Smith and it was great fun – and very revealing.
The Trickster – this episode’s bad guy – let slip something that I am sure will have massive consequences as time goes on.
But that wasn’t the most shocking revelation …. I saw something that stunned me to the core of my being.
Are you ready? The registrar in the wedding scene was played by Zienia Merton, aka Sandra Benes from Space 1999! I know!! Un-be-bloody-lievable, and maximum geek points to me for spotting her!
The last time I saw her in anything was in the short fan film, Message from Moonbase Alpha, which was a nice goodbye to the show and her character.
Since then – hell, before then she had dropped off the radar, so I jumped off my seat and shouted SPACE 1999, causing my wife to spill her drink and then try to remember our solicitor’s number when I explained just what the hell I was yelling about.
For the show itself, it was fun and pacey stuff, with a genuinely touching goodbye between Sarah and The Doctor.
The Trickster also said the doctor was a man of fire and ice, which I am pretty sure has been said before (Family of Blood?) and is also the name of a fan series of the Doctor too. It made me remember this Robert Frost poem as well, which is suitably ominous:
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
Of greater interest was when he told the Doctor ‘the gate is waiting’. The only gate Who reference I can think of was the gates of elysium where the Doctor told Davros he saw him die during the Time War. In mythology, elysium is also the resting place of the souls of heroes.
What does that mean? I have no idea and it could be a whole different gate, but if I were to guess I would say that maybe the Doctor tries to bring back the Time Lords, just like dalek Caan brought back the daleks.
If he does that, then the success or failure of his efforts results in regeneration.
But me coming to that conclusion probably means that is a load of misdirected nonsence, Instead he could get hit on the head by a garden gate after dropping his sonic screwdriver trying to get Gerry Anderson to green light a new series of Space 1999.
Either way, I’m excited and can’t wait for 7pm on November 15 when The Waters of Mars will get this show on the road. I’m going for a lie down now.
