Lunchtime awesome: Mace Windu kicks ass in The Clone Wars cartoon

I FOUND this great clip from a few years ago online last night, but it was so awesome I thought I’d put it up on here.

Mace Windu goes toe to toe with the Droid army and their huge dusty stomping machine – enjoy.

Never Tell Me The Odds by Andy Helms is my latest Star Wars artwork

I FEEL strong enough to pull the ears off a Gundark after buying my latest (but not last) piece of Star Wars art!

Called Never Tell Me The Odds, it was one of a series of beautiful pieces by a chap called OKTotally on Etsy.com, aka Andy Helms. Click through to see his other work, on Star Wars and more.

This one pays tribute to the fastest hunk of junk in the Galaxy in The Empire Strikes Back. Thanks to Alison for the heads up, and for being a cool friend.

Star Wars meets Indiana Jones, with Princess Leia in slave costume too

I HAD the very good fortune to see the Indiana Jones live stunt show at Disney MGM Studios theme park in Florida, and it was awesome.

What’s more my good wife Pam (we had married the day before in Orlando city hall, I wore a cowboy hat, the security guard called me Hombre before frisking me, but that’s another story) managed to suck up to the person on the door, so we were ushered to front row seats.

However I would have given anything to see this show in the flesh – Indy, Princess Leia, Han and Chewie, Boba Fett, Darths Maul and Vader. Disbelief suspended. Cheesy jokes ignored. Enjoyment mode activated.

Thanks to Topless Robot for the heads up.

Star Wars on the New York subway by Improv Everywhere

IMPROV Everywhere are back as they recreate Princess Leia‘s showdown with Darth Vader from Star Wars on the New York subway.

Lovely stuff, and a great follow up to their video as Ghostbusters in New York library, to highlight funding cuts. You can visit their You Tube channel by clicking here.

Star Wars recreated using toys (VIDEO)

I HAD to put this up, as this fan-made Star Wars film basically represents what I spent hour after hour and day after day doing when I was a lad growing up in the 1970s and 1980s.

Who didn’t pretend they were Han Solo, have their Chewbacca growl off to a tee or use the Force to blow up the Death Star (in my case, my mum’s washing up basket).

So Kudos to Sillof for putting it together – part two up soon.

Remembering Star Wars annual number one – scyfilove nostalgia

A SPELL of tidying my house was not entirely wasted time this weekend, as I rediscovered a part of my childhood sitting on my son’s bookshelf – my copy of Star Wars Annual number one.

Published in 1978 (I was six) by a company called Brown & Watson and presented – for some reason – by the great Stan Lee, it is a comic book adaptation of the first film, give or take a few scenes and dialogue  … erm polishes. (I don’t remember Han saying ‘hold on tight kiddies’ as the Falcon escaped from the Death Star)

There’s also a making of article and profiles of the stars, packed with information such as Mark Hamill making a film called Stingray after Star Wars (nope, me neither) and Harrison Ford being a name ‘that’s likely to crop up fairly frequently from now on.’

Anyway, here is a collection of images showing the front cover and some memorable artwork from the book. I think the x-wings one is my favourite. What about you?

Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 trailer sets a high standard

THE Force is strong with this one – the spectacular trailer for LucasartsThe Force Unleashed 2.

However after a first game that was more padawan than Jedi Master, I’m reserving judgement in a big way.

After all, TFU promised a lot and looked great, but fell into the actioner on rails trap that so many Lucasarts games do. Despite the rush of kicking people’s ass with the Force, I remember my feelings playing it went from excited, to frustrated, to bored fairly quickly.

The best Star Wars games – by which I mean the Knights of the Old Republic series – offered freedom for the player to develop and go where he would, before coming back to the central story.

There was also believable interaction with computer characters who had their own motivations, a rounded experience.

Of course this is an action game, not an RPG, but I think it must unlearn what it has learned and reach out if it is to achieve classic status. Here’s hoping.

The Force Unleashed 2 is released in October. Click here to pre-order your copy.

‘I am your father’ from The Empire Strikes Back – great sci-fi moments number 16

Darth Vader appeals to Luke Skywalker

Darth Vader appeals to Luke Skywalker

I WAS eight when I first heard those four words – I am your father.

I’d gone to the aptly named Empire cinema in Widnes, which is now a car park and actually closed for the last time on – of all dates – May 4th 1983.

Back then though, I had gone with my dad to watch The Empire Strikes Back, buoyed with the boundless optimism of the first Star Wars film, expecting another thrilling adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

Walking out past the concession stand, on the plush patterned carpets, I remember seeing the cinema manager who looked like Vincent Price and was wearing a posh suit, as he always did. He was watching the young faces struggling to come to terms with what they had just seen, with the knowledge that sometimes the bad guys win, and that the world would never be the same again.

All from four words – I am your father.

Great science fiction picture no.1 – Peter Mayhew and Harrison Ford meet again

Peter Mayhew and Harrison Ford. Picture by Albert L Ortega

Peter Mayhew and Harrison Ford. Picture by Albert L Ortega

I’M not ashamed to say this picture very nearly made me cry – Han and Chewie, together again.

Peter Mayhew and Harrison Ford met up at The Empire Strikes Back 30th anniversary charity screening in Hollywood and it is striking just how pleased they look to see each other.

For me, every time I look at it, it makes me smile. The flood of Star Wars memories this brought rushing back was really intense and moving too.

A report on the screening is up at the Star Wars website.
